Fraktur: medieval blackletter style in Unicode
Fraktur is a subclass of blackletter typeface characterized by broken, angular strokes - the name comes from the Latin fractura, "a break", describing how its curves are fractured into straight segments. The first Fraktur type was cut around 1513 for a triumphal arch commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I, and it went on to dominate German-language printing for four centuries.
Its end was abrupt and political. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany argued over whether to print in Fraktur or in Latin roman type in what became known as theAntiquaβFraktur dispute. The Nazi regime initially promoted Fraktur as authentically German, then reversed course entirely with the Schrifterlass of January 1941, which declared it a "Schwabacher Jewish" type and banned it from official use. German printing has used roman type ever since - which is why Fraktur survives today almost entirely as decoration rather than as a reading face.
Why Fraktur is in Unicode at all
Unicode does not normally encode typefaces - a in Helvetica and a in Times are the same character. Fraktur is an exception because mathematicians use itsemantically: π€ conventionally denotes a Lie algebra while Gdenotes the corresponding Lie group, and β and β mark the imaginary and real parts of a complex number. Losing the distinction would change the meaning of an equation, so theMathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block encodes Fraktur separately atU+1D504βU+1D537, with bold Fraktur following at U+1D56C onward.
The block has holes, which is the practical quirk of any Fraktur generator. Five letters were already encoded in the Letterlike Symbols block before the math block existed, so their positions in U+1D5xx are permanently reserved and unassigned. This generator substitutes the canonical code points instead:
- β -
U+212D, black-letter capital C - β -
U+210C, black-letter capital H - β -
U+2111, black-letter capital I (the imaginary-part symbol) - β -
U+211C, black-letter capital R (the real-part symbol) - β¨ -
U+2128, black-letter capital Z
Because these are letters rather than glyph styling, they copy into Instagram bios, Discord names, X posts, and tattoo mockups and keep their look on any device with a font covering the block - which includes the default system fonts on iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. Two caveats: only AβZ and aβz convert, since Unicode never encoded Fraktur digits or punctuation, and screen readers announce these as mathematical symbols or skip them, so anything a visitor actually needs to read should stay in plain text. For a heavier weight try Double-Struck Text; for a flowing rather than fractured look, the Cursive Text Generator. Conversion happens locally in this page.
