About This Tool

What is title case, and when do you use it?

Title case is a capitalization convention where the first letter of major words in a title or heading is capitalized. It's the standard format for book titles, article headlines, research paper titles, blog posts, chapter headings, and more.

The tricky part is knowing which words to capitalize and which to keep lowercase. Articles like a, an, and the are usually lowercase unless they're the first or last word. Prepositions and conjunctions have their own rules depending on which style guide you follow.

This tool supports four major style guides:

  • AP Style (Associated Press) — widely used in journalism and news writing. Lowercases prepositions of 3 letters or fewer, coordinating conjunctions, and articles.
  • APA Style (American Psychological Association, 7th ed.) — used in academic and scientific writing. Lowercases articles, coordinating conjunctions, and short prepositions (fewer than 4 letters).
  • Chicago Style (Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed.) — used in books, publishing, and many academic journals. Lowercases all prepositions regardless of length.
  • MLA Style (Modern Language Association, 9th ed.) — used in humanities research. Essentially the same as Chicago for title capitalization.

Regardless of style, all guides agree: always capitalize the first and last word of a title, even if it would normally be lowercase.
