PDF (Portable Document Format) is a page-description format created by Adobe in 1993 and standardised as ISO 32000 in 2008. Its defining property is fixed layout: a PDF specifies exactly where each glyph sits on a page of a given size, so it renders identically on any device, in any viewer, at any zoom level - the opposite of plain text or HTML, which reflow to fit whatever window they land in. Converting text to PDF means committing your content to a page geometry and typeface so it can be printed, archived, or sent somewhere that will not reformat it.

What settings should I choose?

Output is A4, the ISO 216 standard at 210 × 297 mm used everywhere outside North America. Three margin presets are available - narrow at 10 mm, normal at 20 mm, and wide at 30 mm. Normal is the safe default: most desktop and office printers have an unprintable border of roughly 5 mm, and anything tighter than 10 mm risks clipping. Wide margins give a shorter measure per line, which is easier to read for long prose. Four font sizes from 10 to 16 are offered; 12 is close to standard document body size, while 10 is better for dense log or code output where you want more lines per page.

The typeface is Helvetica, one of the fourteen standard Base 14 fonts that every conforming PDF reader is required to provide. Because it is not embedded, the resulting files are small - typically a few kilobytes - and open reliably everywhere. The trade-off is character coverage: the Base 14 fonts use WinAnsi encoding, so Cyrillic, Greek, CJK, and most emoji cannot be represented and will not appear. For those scripts you need a converter that embeds a Unicode font. Text wraps automatically at the right margin and new pages are appended as content overflows, so document length is not a constraint.

Your text is never transmitted, which makes the tool safe for confidential drafts, contracts, and anything you would not paste into a cloud service.
