Lorem Ipsum is scrambled pseudo-Latin used to fill a layout while the real copy is still being written. Its source is genuine: De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The passage begins “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet...”- “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain.” A 16th-century printer setting a type specimen chopped into the middle of dolorem, leaving the lorem that has fronted the passage ever since, through Letraset sheets, PageMaker, and every design tool shipping today.

Why nonsense Latin instead of “text text text”?

Two properties do the work. First, it is unreadable - put real English in a mockup and reviewers start editing the copy instead of critiquing the grid. Second, its texture is right: word lengths and the distribution of ascenders and descenders sit close enough to English that the grey block looks like a real column of type. Repeating “test” or mashing the keyboard produces a rhythm no reader would encounter, so line breaks and leading lie to you.

This generator offers three units, each suited to a different job:

• Paragraphs: Blocks of 3–6 sentences of 8–16 words each, separated by blank lines. Use for article bodies and long-form layout proofing.
• Sentences: Standalone sentences - the right size for card descriptions, tooltips, and list items.
• Words: An exact count in a single run, for headlines, button labels, and testing character-limit truncation.

The “Start with Lorem ipsum” toggle pins the opening to the canonical “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”, which reviewers recognize instantly as placeholder. Switch it off and every word is drawn at random, giving output that looks less boilerplate across repeated blocks.

When not to reach for it

Content-first designers argue, fairly, that dummy text hides problems. A nav label reading consectetur never reveals that the real word is “Subscriptions & Billing” and will wrap. Lorem Ipsum carries no headings, links, or emphasis either, so it cannot surface accessibility issues in heading hierarchy or link text. For navigation, forms, and empty states, draft realistic content instead; save the Latin for body copy of genuinely unknown length. And never ship it - placeholder text in production reads as abandonment, and search engines index the nonsense verbatim.

Everything is assembled locally from a built-in word list and regenerates the moment you change a setting, so the generator keeps working with the wifi off.
