Alternating case is a text style in which capitalization flips on every successive character, turning this is a great idea into tHiS iS a GrEaT iDeA. It goes by several names online - mock case, mocking case, Spongebob case, and studly caps - and it functions as a written tone marker: the erratic capitals tell the reader to hear the sentence in a taunting, sing-song voice rather than a sincere one.

The convention has two separate lineages. StudlyCaps dates to 1980s and 1990s BBS and warez culture, where irregular capitalization signalled in-group identity. The modern sarcastic meaning comes from the Mocking SpongeBob image macro, which spread in 2017 from a screenshot of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Little Yellow Book" and paired a hunched cartoon chicken-walk with alternating-case text. Once that pairing caught on, the typography alone carried the joke, and the image became optional.

How the alternation is calculated

This converter alternates by character position, counting spaces and punctuation as positions. That is why the pattern appears to drift between words: after a space the next letter may land on either phase. The alternative approach - alternating only across letters and skipping everything else - produces a stricter zigzag but looks more mechanical, and it is not what the meme popularized. Odd-position variants exist too, so hElLo and HeLlO are both valid readings of the same idea.

Two practical notes. Unlike Unicode font generators, this output is ordinary ASCII, so it survives copy-paste anywhere and stays fully searchable - but for the same reason it will not evade a keyword filter, and platforms index it normally. And because screen readers may pronounce erratic capitals letter by letter or with odd emphasis, keep mock case to short bursts rather than whole posts if accessibility matters to your audience.
